Anime and Me

I love watching anime. Since I was a kid, the Chinese-dubbed anime broadcasted in Taiwanese television channels were my favorite shows. Even though I’m a grown-ass woman now, I love watching anime, very much. Although my mom would comment that I should grow out of it because I am no longer a kid, I think that it is because she does not know how dark some anime could be. Actually, my passion has gained throughout the years. It is the only activity that genuinely makes me happy (at least for now, it is true). To me, anime is fascinating, exciting and definitely out-of-the-world. I admire how wild the imagination of the creators can get, and how the animators tell the story through creative visualization.

As I said it all started from television, then, when the internet is available to us during high school, I started downloading it as many as I can. Right now, I still have around 2TB of downloaded anime that I haven’t watched. I got into college and free time was a luxury at that time, so they are on the watch list with the newly released ones. It was at the phase that I tried to watch as many anime as possible. I would binge watching them during the vacations. However, I now realize that it was dishonest and unhealthy. I rushed myself to finish one series after another so that I could fit the title of “Otaku” well, and so that when people mentioned a title, I could brag about finishing it in one day. However, I would forget the story after a few days. The two benefits I got from this habit are: 1. I can understand some Japanese, and 2. My Chinese subtitle reading skills is superb.

When the phase ended, I decided that I want to mindfully watch for the plot, logic, character relationships, and inspiration, and enjoy the voice performance and animating effects. I learn to pay attention to the details of the animation, the performance of the voice actors, the development of the plots and the growth of the characters. This mindfulness intensifies my enjoyment and I discover the value of the story. Now, I always learn a few things after finishing one series.

Watching anime makes my heart content and rescue me from bad mood for countless time. Of course, it takes the right anime, too. There are some anime which are not my type and I learn to avoid them rather than blindly download them like I did back in high school. I am glad that I have one hobby that I could run to whenever life hits me hard. It does not solve any problems, of course, but it helps me take a break, before going back to dealing with the reality.
