Orange
Year: 2016
Studio: Telecom Animation Film
Episode: 13
Synopsis
Orange is the story of five people sending letters to their
10-year-younger-self in order to save one of their friends who committed
suicide. I love the pacing and storytelling of the anime. Each episode ends
before I knew it.
My Review
Is ‘orange’ a color or a fruit? I was looking for a
light-hearted shoujo anime to watch when I came across Orange. I
thought: this looks like a good one. What could go wrong? And it didn’t take
long for me to realize I was dead wrong. If I have a life of anime that make me
cry my heart out, Orange definitely will be on the top 10.

I love the character building of this anime. Everyone (the
six main protagonists) has their own personalities, however, some were
highlighted more often than others. The character with the perfect personality
would be Suwa Hiroto. He is good looking, tall, muscular, and caring.
Who wouldn’t fall for him? Not to mention he sacrifices his love to the girl he
loves to save his best friend. Takamiya
Naho, the main female protagonist, is selfless. However, she is too passive
and reserving. Naruse Kakeru is similar to Naho.
There is not much description about their interaction, which
makes the story as short as 13 episodes. The main story is about how Takamiya
Naho tries her best to save Naruse Kakeru from wanting to die. I
think the anime wants to highlight mental health issue. Kakeru has
depression because he thinks that he causes his mother’s suicide by not
accompanying her to the hospital on the day she committed suicide. He thinks
that he does not deserve happiness and decides to stay away from people to not
hurt them like he did to his mom. I do not understand the feeling of depression
nor can I relate myself to his thought. However, I am certain that what the
anime portrayed, having their friends to save him, is a way to help people with
depression. I think there is a small chance that such serious case could happen
in real life, not about the mental illness, but the reason causing it. It would
be very hard to resolve if someone experienced similar thing. I am certain that
if there weren’t those letters, they would again have missed the chance to save
Kakeru. There is hardly any clue to notice in natural setting. Plus, the
passive personality of Naho and Kakeru, I guarantee that it is
hard for them to be together without the letters and their friends’ support.
So let’s start being more caring about people around you.
Don’t take them for granted. They might be having a tough time in their lives.
If you love someone, tell them so. Don’t wait until other people take them away
and regret. You are not the center of the universe. If you really want
something, work for it. It won’t come to you without hard work. If someone
treats you nice, thank them and treat them nicer. If someone is mean to you,
melt them with your kindness. If they are toxic to you, leave them. Hate will
only bring negative energy that ruin your happiness. Life is short. Why not
live it happily? So back to our question at the top, is ‘orange’ a color or a
fruit? It is both. As a fruit, it is sour and sweet. As a color, it is the
beautiful sunset.
Conclusion
I would recommend this to people who like watching teenage
romance anime and story about friendship, and anyone who wants to experience deep
feelings and emotions. I had a deep reflection after watching this anime as it
motivated me to pay more attention to people around me and be nice and caring
to people.
